Pipette calibration services

We offer different pipette calibration service levels, including:

  • Internal and external cleaning

It involves cleaning the pipette to avoid contaminating samples. We also decontaminate them to ensure your test results will be accurate and dependable. Besides, a decontaminated pipette enhances your experiments and tests. We use a wide range of cleaning procedures, from water to steam.

  • Visual and functional inspection

Our highly trained experts perform visual inspection, ensuring the pipette is in perfect condition. Some aspects they’ll look for include corrosion, leaks, and cracks that might affect the pipette’s functionality. If the device requires repair, we will do it. However, if it is beyond repair, we will replace it. It is in a bid to bolster your lab’s efficiency and productivity.

  • Seal and O-ring

For a pipette to work, it needs a quality seal and an O-ring. They prevent the entry of air, which can affect the effectiveness of the pipette. During pipette calibration, we ensure the seal and O-ring are in good shape, so they don’t affect its efficacy.

  • Gravimetric adjustment and calibration

Gravimetric adjustment and calibration help in volumetric pipette calibration. It uses pure water as a standard reference when converting mass values to volumetric ones. The results provide “To Deliver” (TD) or “To Contain” (TC) calibration. It is ideal for high-accuracy calibration. As expected, it demonstrates traceability to the international units (SI) system.

  • Pipette calibration label

Once calibration is complete, we will provide a pipette calibration label for verification by relevant bodies.

  • Pipette calibration certificate

As a leading service provider for pipette calibration in California, Biotechnical Services offers calibration certificates. It is to show that the calibration process is within the industry standards.

Pipette brands that we calibrate

We offer pipette calibration services for all leading brands, including:

  • Thermos Scientific
  • Hamilton
  • Brinkman
  • Eppendorf
  • BrandTech
  • Rainin
  • Gilson
  • Scilogex MicroPette

Regardless of the pipette brand, you can be sure we will calibrate it to meet your requirements. So call us today for more information.

Why you should calibrate your pipettes

There are many reasons why you should calibrate your pipettes, including the following:

  • Preventing wear and tear

Pipettes have several moving parts, such as seals, O-rings, gears, and pistons. With continued use, these parts tend to wear out, affecting the effectiveness and accuracy of the gadget. It can lead to poor results and time wastage. Periodic pipette calibrations and preventative maintenance can help mitigate errors, maintaining the pipette’s accuracy.

  • Improved accuracy

Let’s face it; a poorly maintained pipette will no doubt give you inaccurate results. Calibration can help prevent inaccuracy since its measurement will be within standards such as ISO 8655: 2002. As such, its accuracy will lead to more conclusive and dependable results.

  • Compliance

Government regulatory bodies in California require labs to comply with specific industry standards. It is to facilitate the integrity of products and test results. If your lab is non-compliant, you might receive hefty fines or have your lab closed.

Besides, the calibration service provider ought to use pipette calibration tools that meet these regulations. If you use a compliant calibration company’s services, your lab will automatically comply with the rules.

  • Maintaining reproducibility

Most labs will carry out scientific discoveries in a bid to develop new drugs or therapies. For their findings to be viable in a real-world setting, they need to be reproducible. As such, a scientist should easily control variables that affect pipette measurement performance. And one can achieve this through regular calibration that meets ISO 8655 requirements.

  • Good practice

Overall, it is good practice to have regular pipette calibration. As you’d guess, measurement controls separate valid processes from invalid ones. With pipette calibration, ISO 8655 sets the standard for pipette accuracy. It reduces errors and wastage, meaning you’ll only get accurate results.

How often should pipettes be calibrated?

The frequency of pipette calibration depends on how often you use them. Ideally, they should be calibrated annually. However, monthly calibration is an ideal schedule if you use them frequently.

How do you calibrate a pipette?

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to calibrate a pipette.

  • Collect the necessary tools, such as the pipette, tips, beaker, thermometer, weigh boats, and distilled water.
  • Measure the water temperature. You will use the measurements during calculations to check calibration.
  • Use a scale with microgram readability to weigh the weigh boat. Ensure to set it to zero after closing the balance door.
  • Aspirate and dispense the set volume three times to pre-rinse the pipette tip. Ensure to remove any liquid.
  • Next, ensure to aspirate the calibration volume without bubble formation and dispense the liquid into the weight boat. Record the reading on the scale and repeat this ten times.
  • Use the equation V = W x Z to calculate the dispensed volume. W (water weight), Z (Z-factor), and V = dispensed water calculated volume.
  • Calculate the mean of the ten trials.
  • Use the equation A = 100 x Vavg/V0. Vavg (average calculated volume), V0 (volume you were dispensing), and A (pipette accuracy).
  • The pipette is calibrated if the range is between 99 and 101%.
